Black Shank Resistant Burley Varieties

Black shank is a soil-borne disease that can be devastating to tobacco. In some years it can seriously lower yields, especially where disease populations are high and non-resistant varieties are used. The first symptom usually noticeable is wilting. While plants sometimes recover during the night, they wilt again the following day, and leaves will eventually turn yellow and die. Larger roots of plants may turn black, and stalk may turn black near soil-level. Another symptom that occurs in advanced stages of black shank is called disking. Tissue inside stalks (pith) often dries, turns brown or black and separates into disks, or plate-like structures. One management practice for controlling black shank is the use of resistant varieties. F.W. Rickard Seeds, Inc. offers several varieties with black shank resistance. NOTE: Resistance does not equal immunity.

KT 200LC A recent release from the joint tobacco breeding program at the Universities of Tennessee and Kentucky with level 6 resistance to both races of black shank. It also has resistance to black root rot, wildfire, tobacco mosaic virus, and the virus complex. KT 200LC is a semi-erect, late-maturing hybrid with high yield potential. Because of its late maturity, KT 200LC should be topped early and allowed to stand 5 weeks before harvest to optimize its curing potential.
NC 5 A hybrid release from NC State University with an excellent disease resistance package. NC 5 is a medium-late maturity, high-yielding black shank resistant variety with good leaf quality. It has very high resistance to race 0 black shank and low resistance to race 1 black shank. It has high resistance to black root rot and resistance to tobacco mosaic virus, wildfire, and the virus complex.
TN 90 Has level 4 resistance to race 0 and race 1 black shank. Resistance to black root rot and wildfire, plus tobacco mosaic, vein mottling and etch viruses.  It has consistent yielding ability along with the smallest stalk of any black shank resistant variety.
R 630 An early maturity hybrid with level 4 resistance to Race 0 and Race 1 black shank. High resistance to black root rot, wildfire, and tobacco mosaic virus. Resistance to etch and vein mottling virus. Has excellent yield potential and leaf quality.
NC 6 A hybrid release from North Carolina State University. NC 6 is a medium-late maturity, high-yielding variety with good leaf quality. It has very high resistance to race 0 black shank and low resistance to race 1 black shank. It also has resistance to black root rot, tobacco mosaic virus, wildfire, the virus complex and races 1 and 3 of the Southern root knot nematode.
msKY 14 x L8 Has high mosaic and wildfire resistance, medium resistance to black root rot, fusarium wilt, and high resistance to race 0 blank shank. It is susceptible to race 1 black shank. It has consistent yield and excellent color. It needs to be topped early for sucker control.
R 610 Has level 4 resistance to both race 0 and race 1 black shank, medium black root rot resistance and low to medium Fusarium wilt resistance. R 610 has very large, closely spaced leaves and excellent quality.
TN 97LC A high-yielding hybrid with good black shank resistance, resistance to tobacco vein mottling, tobacco etch and mosaic virus. Also has high black root rot and wildfire resistance.
TN 86 A large, high-yielding variety with level 4 resistance to race 0 and race 1 black shank. High resistance to black root rot, wildfire, vein mottling virus and medium resistance to tobacco etch virus. It is a late-maturing variety.
KT 204LC A medium to late maturing variety that has level 7 resistance to both races of black shank. The growth habit of KT 204LC is semi-upright, similiar to TN90. KT 204LC produces cured leaves that are medium to heavy bodied and tan to reddish-tan in color under normal curing conditions. KT 204LC has significantly better leaf color than KT 200LC and is comparable to the other popular burley varieties.
